How do I get a Markdown file out of ChatGPT?

The regular chat doesn't save files — copy the answer and paste it into MDX. ChatGPT Canvas can download a .md file (the download icon, top-right), which you then open in MDX. You can set MDX as the default app for .md files so a double-click just works. See the full guide at /open-md-file.

Why does ChatGPT Markdown look broken when I paste it into Word?

Word pastes the raw Markdown source — the **, #, and pipe-table characters ChatGPT uses for formatting. MDX interprets that Markdown and shows the formatted document, then exports a clean .docx for Word.

Can I edit ChatGPT tables and code blocks without touching syntax?

Yes. Tables are edited in a real grid with no pipe characters, and code blocks stay syntax-highlighted. You never edit raw Markdown source.
